A mass Classification index was devised to determine the variability of highly variable Quaternary gravel deposits in the Netherlands. To classify the “mass” properties trials have been carried out using the “scanline” concept. This paper reviews the Kesgrave Sands and Gravels as evidence for the pre-glacial history of the River Thames and its main tributaries. Attention is given to the definitions of the deposit, the lithological and sedimentological properties, and the geographical and stratigraphical variations of these properties. Three kinds of Quaternary sediments are present in northeast Southland: aeolian deposits, terrace gravels, and hill slope colluvium. The aim of this paper is to review and describe the Quaternary sediments and erosion pattern of northeast Southland and reconstruct the likely climate under which sedimentation and erosion occurred. ABSTRACT--Textural and compositional data from gravels in the Western Valley of the Tennessee River show that Cretaceous gravels can be distinguished from Pliocene-Quaternary gravels. Cretaceous gravels are coarse grained, angular, and dominated by white (Camden) chert. All of the younger gravels are dominated by honey-colored (Ft. Payne) chert. The Quaternary deposits are described in eight major groupings: glacial, periglacial, aeolian, fluviatile, lacustrine, estuarine, marine, and karst. These groupings are based on the main range of environments that existed at different places and different times in England during the Quaternary, some of which continue during the present day.
